    the First World War and the forced mass exodus of Armenians from Turkey following the 1915 Armenian Genocide In 1920 more than one thousand survivors of the Armenian Genocide settled in Belgium In 1940 50s the number of Armenian community increased by reaching almost 2 500 thousands In 1970s the large group of Armenians came to Belgium especially from Syria Lebanon Iran as well as recently from Armenia The exact number of Armenians in the country is unknown but is unofficially estimated to be about 20 000 The majority of Armenians live in Brussels and Antwerp There is a small community of Armenians in the cities of Gent Liege and Mechelen Among lawyers architectures and doctors there are many Armenians involved in trade and diamond industry Especially those involved in diamond industry play a very important role in promoting the Armenian Belgium trade relations Since 1922 the community is lead by the Committee of Belgian Armenians This body is officially recognized by the Belgian government The Armenian Church An Armenian church Eglise Armenienne Apostolique Sainte Marie Madeleine is the main church of the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox community It is related to the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin of Armenian Apostolic Church The church structure was erected and consecrated in May 1990 The Reverend of the Church is Father Zadik Avedikian Social and cultural life of the Community In different years various charity youth and cultural organizations was created by the Armenians of Belgium and all with the same goal to preserve the Armenian identity There is also the Armenian Hay tun for community gatherings established in 1980 Since that time it has played an important role in organizing public life for the Armenians The main Armenian organizations of Belgium are the Armenian General Benevolent Union AGBU Arpak Mekhitarian The Armenian

    Bank the Speaker of the National Assembly the heads of the three main Armenian political parties and of major benevolent institutions such as the AGBU ARF the Armenian Congress of America and other outstanding benefactors and public figures from Armenia Artsakh and Diaspora The Hayastan All Armenian Fund implements its projects through a global network of 22 affiliates which operate in the United States Los Angeles and New York Canada Toronto and Montreal France Great Britain Germany Austria Holland Sweden Switzerland Australia Brazil Lebanon Argentina Buenos Aires and Cordoba Greece Cyprus Syria Uruguay Romania and Russia The mentioned last seven affiliates have been opened in 2009 2011 years The local affiliates closely cooperate with representatives of church non governmental and charity organizations operating in their communities as well as with Diaspora donors and dignitaries The Fund s Yerevan based Executive Board and affiliates are reportable to the Board of Trustees The funds financial resources are obtained through a variety of fundraising activities including annual telethons phoneathons radiothons benefit bike rides gala dinners concerts and exhibitions donations made at post offices in Armenia or through SMS as well as contributions to donor defined projects and wills Since 1996 every year the annual Telethon broadcast from Los Angeles reports on global fundraising totals for the year familiarizes supporters with newly completed and ongoing projects and rallies the worldwide Armenian community around an overarching development objective Amounts raised at the Telethon are directed to the implementation of an comprehensive strategic project approved b ythe Board of Trustees The European Phoneathon spearheaded by the fund s French affiliate reaches Armenian supporters across France Germany Switzerland Holland and Greece securing donations for a given year s strategic objective Phoneathons are also conducted in Argentina and Uruguay The fund s accomplishments to date comprise a broad range of initiatives that are of vital importance to our homeland They include the construction or renovation of roads schools kindergartens hospitals and water and gas networks as well as assistance to socially vulnerable groups such as families of disabled or deceased veterans of Artsakh s war of liberation students from disadvantaged families Today the generous support of the worldwide Armenian community continues to help improve the lives of thousands in Armenia and Artsakh by securing housing water heating and other core necessities The fund is also a major supporter of science and the visual arts promoting the work of outstanding artists intellectuals and scientists as well as gifted youths The Fund s first major initiative was the Winter Humanitarian Project which alleviated pressing social needs in 1992 95 At the same time the Fund initiated a house building program following the Spitak 1988 earthquake providing accommodation to those left without shelter in Gyumri Vanadzor Stepanavan and Spitak Since 1995 the Fund has been providing a continuing financial assistance to needy students and families of deceased and invalided soldiers of the Artsakh conflict In 1995 99 the Fund was entrusted with implementing major infrastructure development projects as a result of

    de la Mission de la République d Arménie à l Union européenne le 5 août 2014 Il détient le rang diplomatique d ambassadeur extraordinaire et plénipotentiaire S E Mr Tatoul Markarian a été ambassadeur extraordinaire et plénipotentiaire de la République d Arménie aux Etats Unis du mars 2005 à août 2014 Parallèlement il a représenté la République d Arménie à l Organisation des Etats américains où l Arménie a un statut d observateur D avril 2012 au décembre 2013 il a également été ambassadeur de la République d Arménie aux Etats Unis du Mexique Avant d occuper ce poste depuis juin 2000 l ambassadeur Markarian a été vice ministre des Affaires étrangères de la République d Arménie A ce titre ses responsabilités comprenaient les départements du Ministère de affaires politico militaires les organisations internationales les pays de la CEI de l Asie Pacifique et en Afrique Il était également le coordinateur arménien aux Etats Unis Dialogue stratégique Arménie ainsi que le dialogue politico militaire de l OTAN Arménie En 2002 2004 l ambassadeur Markarian a également été représentant spécial du Président de la République d Arménie pour les négociations du Haut Karabakh En 1999 2000 il a été conseiller du ministre des Affaires étrangères En termes de missions diplomatiques précédentes l ambassadeur Tatoul Markarian a été adjoint de la mission diplomatique de l Ambassade de la République d Arménie aux Etats Unis d Amérique et ministre conseiller du décembre 1994 au janvier 1999 Avant de rejoindre le Ministère des Affaires étrangères l ambassadeur Markarian a occupé des postes législatifs et exécutifs de la République d Arménie nouvellement indépendante Il a été adjoint au vice président du Parlement arménien de 1990 à 1991 et adjoint ensuite conseiller du vice président de la République d Arménie de 1991 à 1994 occupant également
