    48 Travel and Tourism 170 Activities 38 Shopping 50 Legal Services 35 Services 30 Search Name Directory Sites of Interest Museums The Armenian Art Gallery of Children s Works The World through the Eyes of Children is the name of an exhibit that opened in the Artists s Union of Armenia in 1968 on the initiative of art expert Henrik Igitian Soon after the Children s Art Gallery was founded in 1970 and was later reorganized as the Museum of Children s Art The Gallery has a permanent exhibit and a showroom where individual and thematic exhibitions are organized It accepts children s paintings from all over the world and exchanges some of its own with institutions abroad In 1975 the British Prime Minister Harold Wilson donated 100 paintings by British children to the Gallery The Gallery has about 200 000 exhibits paintings sculptures graphic works ceramics appliqué carpets rugs and embroidery from about 120 countries of the world Artwork from the Museum s stock has been sent to exhibitions staged in the US France Italy Czech Republic Slovakia Japan and elsewhere and shown at the Children s Paintings Exhibition From Fuji to Ararat displayed in 1997 in Yerevan at

    Vayots Dzor 53 km east of Yeghegnadzor the capital of Vayots Dzor It was a popular destination during the Soviet era and nowadays is still famous for its hot springs and its brand of mineral water that is bottled in the vicinity The town is considered to be attractive for its huge waterfall the natural bridge the lake its forests with the walking trails and mineral water pools Jermuk is currently being redeveloped to become a modern centre of tourism and health services The town is also being set up to become a sort of Chess centre with numerous chess tournaments hosted or scheduled to be hosted Finally Jermuk is well known among the Armenian people for its distinctively fresh air Jermuk occupies an area which is historically considered as part of the Vayots Dzor district of the Syunik province within Armenia Mayor It was first mentioned in the 13th century by historian Stepanos Orbelian in his work about the History of the Sisakan district But the ruins of an ancient fortress and an 8th century basilica testify that the human settlement near the fountains of Jermuk has started long before the 13th century The fortress of Jermuk was built during the rule of the Artaxiad Dynasty In ancient times the mineral water of Jermuk was known for its curing features The princes of Syunik regarded the Jermuk sources and water as healing and built several pools filled with it thereby making the little town their holiday destination During the 1830s a Russian engineer geologist called Voskoboynikov arrived in Armenia and began explorations on Jermuk s geographical depth as well as the contents and characteristics of Jermuk waters His observations on Jermuk were published in the Mountain Magazine journal in 1831 and later in 1855 in the Caucasian Calenda magazine

    Dzor Yerevan Geography Demographics Culture Language Religion Holidays Useful Electricity Climate Currency Telephone Telecommunications Official Government Embassies Visas and Passport Transportation Photos Yerevan Landscapes Historical monuments Nature People Events Reviews Popular Destinations Tatev Saghmosavank Photos Sevanavank Before football match Destinations Goshavank Goshavank is a 12 13th century Armenian monastery located in the village of Gosh in the Tavush Province of Armenia Today the monastery is not a functioning religious complex although it remains a popular tourist destination and has recently undergone some light restoration The impressive monastery which has remained in relatively good condition also houses one of the world s finest examples of a khachkar Goshavank was erected in the place of an older monastery once known as Nor Getik which had been destroyed by an earthquake in 1188 Mkhitar Gosh a statesman scientist and author of numerous fables and parables as well as the first criminal code took part in the rebuilding of the monastery At Goshavank Mkhitar Gosh founded a school One of its alumni an Armenian scientist by the name of Kirakos Gandzaketsi wrote The History of Armenia The architect Mkhitar the Carpenter and his disciple Hovhannes also took an active part in the building of the monastery The complex was later renamed Goshavank and the village named Gosh in his honor Goshavank does not have outer walls and is surrounded by village homes All of the buildings are attached to each other except for S Hripsime Chapel which is located on the opposite hillside and within view Numerous religious and monumental civil buildings show that in the twelfth to thirteenth centuries the monastery was full of life The churches are decorated in accordance with the traditions of the time As a rule the door portals and windows are framed in rectangular or arched platbands some
